For the last several years I have always taken the time in September to write a new opening/greeting song. In the past, I would create the new song and then share it with my music therapy faculty at our first departmental meeting. This time I started the song in G Mixolydian, and later added moved it to D Ionian. I love creating and sharing modal songs, and I am working on putting all my compositions together in a forthcoming resource, “Songwriting With Modes”. In the meantime, enjoy this free download with lyric and chord sheet.

I love creating opening songs that engage the body and voice. This song includes different body parts to get moving and offers sections for echo singing or singing on “oo”. I also added in a section to shout out some great catch phrases like “Light my fire!” and “Start me up!”. Remind you of any fun rock songs? This song can then lead you into a unit on exploring other motivational songs and songs that get you moving!
