Immediate Job Opening: Music Therapists, Part-Time
Spectrum Creative Arts is a community arts center with a mission to provide the highest quality arts programming to individuals of all ages and abilities residing in the Greater Rochester area. Founded in 2013 by three music therapists, Spectrum employs a diverse team of dynamic professionals, and is committed to being a workplace that fosters creativity and passion.
Spectrum is currently seeking a part-time music therapist to join their exceptional team of creative arts professionals.
We currently have both school-based and clinic-based hours available.
School-based music therapist
The music therapist position includes providing individual, group, and consultation services to students in grades preschool – grade 12 in contracted Rochester area school districts. Experience working in school settings is preferred, but not required.
Clinic-based music therapist
The music therapist will provide individual and group music therapy, and adapted music instruction sessions at the Spectrum clinic and community sites to typically-developing individuals, as well as students with developmental needs and intellectual impairments. Student ages vary. Experience working with individuals with developmental needs preferred.
Applicants must have experience facilitating group sessions, as well as working with individuals with developmental needs and intellectual impairment. Excellent musical and clinical skills required. Newer professionals are encouraged to apply. Access to reliable transportation is necessary to fulfill position requirements.

Please note: Music therapist applicants will be placed in either the school-based position, or clinic-based position, at the discretion of Spectrum management based off of observed skill sets and strengths. By submitting an application for the current part-time openings, applicants are interested in both positions, and recognize that he/she/they will be placed in the position by Spectrum management that best compliments their skill sets and strengths.
Professional Duties and Expectations
Description of Positions:
School-based music therapist
In the school setting, the music therapist will provide individual, group, and consultation services to students grades K-12 in contracted districts.
School-based services are scheduled Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM. This position requires travel to-and-from various school district and community sites, and availability Monday through Friday within the timeframes listed above.
Clinic-based music therapist
The music therapist will provide music therapy and adapted music instruction services at the Spectrum clinic, and Rochester community locations. Populations served include typically-developing individuals, as well as students with developmental needs and intellectual impairment. Student ages vary from early childhood through mature adult.
Sessions are scheduled Monday through Friday, between the hours of
12:00 PM – 7:00 PM. This position requires travel to-and-from various community sites, and availability Monday through Friday within the timeframes listed above.
Responsibilities: The specific responsibilities of the part-time music therapist include (but are not limited to):
School Setting:
- Providing individual, group, and consultation services in schools
- Conducting intake evaluations for students referred for music therapy
- Identifying, creating, and monitoring relevant IEP goals and objectives
- Completing documentation, progress notes, and annual review reports
- Scheduling and conducting music therapy evaluations, per district request
- Collaborating with interdisciplinary team to address IEP goals
- Attending district team meetings
All Settings:
- Creating engaging clinical and/or learning content for sessions
- Utilizing clinical approaches that appropriately and effectively meet each student’s needs
- Exercising effective behavioral management and group facilitation strategies
- Familiarizing community contracts with Spectrum opportunities and programming
- Coordinating appropriate performance opportunities for students, based on therapeutic and learning goals
- Documenting and submitting weekly attendance, driving time, and mileage information
- Assisting with Spectrum marketing efforts
- Attending weekly staff meetings and individual supervision
