It’s that time of year where we pay tribute to the most important ladies in our lives! Moms, Grandmas, Step-Moms, Mom-in-Laws…..we salute you! This original song was designed to help our students find some thoughtful ways of sharing what mom means to them!

Setting Up for Songwriting

One of the lyric components of Hey! Hey! It’s Mother’s Day includes several compliments statements.  For example: You’re the best!, You’re the queen!, You’re the bomb!  For students who might need choices or examples to refer to, I have prepared Compliment Cards with phrases that could be easily added into the song.

To Rhyme or Not to Rhyme…

Another lyric component of this song includes a section to highlight the skills and traits your have learned specifically from your Mom.  Sometimes I will prepare visuals for this section, but often this is best lead through discussion or a vocal improvisation experience.  In my example I used rhyming in this section, but this can absolutely be dropped in favor of client ideas!

Extending the Experience

Here are some quick ideas to add more to the experience or extend it:

  1. Incorporate a drum or instrument part with “Hey! Hey! It’s Mother’s Day”.
  2. Create a rap section about Mom to replace one of the sections of the song, or extend the song.
  3. Assist the student in creating a Mother’s Day card to highlight phrases from the song and their own artwork.
